RapidArc Rotational Radiation Therapy is a very advanced technology at Tribeca Radiation Oncology and used with Varian Medical Systems. It combines the most sophisticated modalities, Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) and Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), into one type of treatment that reduces treatment time and radiation exposure. Sometimes referred to as IMRT Arc Therapy or Volumetric Arc Therapy (VMAT), RapidArc delivers conformal beams of radiation to the treatment site while the linear accelerator rotates around the patient. The machine has a beam’s eye view of the patient’s structures following IGRT targeting.
Each RapidArc rotation delivers radiation in 90 seconds or less. Conventional IMRT and IGRT treatments take about 10 minutes to deliver radiation with a stop and go technique. Not only is the fast treatment convenient for daily patient appointments, it is beneficial for accurate radiation treatment because there is less chance of movement by our internal structures, like the bladder and the rectum.
