High Dose Rate (HDR) Brachytherapy
High Dose Rate Brachytherapy is an internal form of radiotherapy. Unlike IGRT, IMRT, and RapidArc treatment techniques that use external radiation beams to deliver dose, HDR brachytherapy involves placing a small radioactive source in the targeted treatment area (via a catheter) for the allotted time it takes to deliver the prescribed dose.
HDR brachytherapy treatments can be combined with external beam radiation treatments or can be used as the sole form of treatment for certain diagnoses. Here at Tribeca Radiation Oncology we treat breast and gynecological cancers with HDR brachytherapy, as well as certain head and neck and esophageal cancers. At consultation the Radiation Oncologist will discuss your candidacy for brachytherapy, as well as preparations and expectations for treatment. HDR brachytherapy alone will be an accelerated treatment course, unlike external beam treatments.
